Gaming and betting law in Nigeria
AIO Law advises gaming operators, technology businesses, investors and other industry participants on entering and operating within the Nigerian gaming market.
We assist clients in understanding applicable regulatory requirements, structuring Nigerian operations, pursuing appropriate licences or approvals and managing ongoing legal and compliance matters.
Gaming regulation in Nigeria is not uniform across the country. Requirements can differ by jurisdiction and by activity.
Request a Gaming Market-Entry AssessmentWhy this requires strategy
Start with the operating model, not the application form.
Gaming regulation in Nigeria requires careful consideration of the activity being offered, the location of the operator and customers, the relevant jurisdiction, technology arrangements and the commercial structure supporting the business.
An operator considering Nigeria should determine the regulatory pathway before committing to a launch structure.
AIO Law helps turn these questions into a practical market-entry plan.

International operators
Considering Nigeria from outside the market?
International operators frequently need answers to several questions before deciding whether and how to enter Nigeria.
- What Nigerian entity or structure is required?
- Which regulatory authorities are relevant?
- Which licences or approvals may apply?
- How does the proposed online or retail model affect the analysis?
- What agreements are needed locally?
- What compliance framework should be in place before launch?
AIO Law can coordinate these questions as a Nigerian market-entry workstream.
Questions
Gaming in Nigeria: common questions.
Does a foreign gaming operator need a Nigerian company?
In many cases the relevant regulator will expect a locally incorporated entity, and Nigerian company law generally requires foreign companies carrying on business in Nigeria to incorporate locally. The position depends on the activity and jurisdiction, and should be confirmed for your model.
Which Nigerian gaming regulator applies to my business?
That depends on the gaming activity, where it is offered and where customers are located. Regulatory competence has been the subject of recent constitutional litigation, so the analysis should be done at the time of entry.
Can an overseas gaming company offer services into Nigeria?
Offering gaming services to Nigerian customers without the required authorisation can expose an operator to enforcement. We assess what authorisation, structure and local arrangements your proposed model requires.
Does an online operator require a different regulatory approach?
Often, yes. Online and remote models raise questions about the location of servers, customers and payment flows that a retail operation may not.
Can AIO Law assist with corporate establishment as well as gaming regulation?
Yes. We can coordinate the corporate, regulatory, commercial and trademark workstreams involved in establishing a Nigerian gaming operation.
Do you guarantee that a licence will be granted?
No. Licensing decisions rest with the relevant authority. We advise on requirements, prepare the application and manage the process within the agreed scope.
